Pointless Fighting
This piece is being posted on two sites – libertyPell.com and WellPlayed.US – because the topic is common to both: pointless fighting.
Not much use in sports. Not much use in running a country.
Here is the background according to Emma Fitzsimmons in her New York Times piece “Four People Charged in Brawl at Jets Patriots Game.”
“Four people [two men and two women, three in their 20’s one in his 30’s, two Pats fans two Jets fans] were charged with assault on Tuesday, two days after a brawl in which a male New York Jets fan hit a female New England Patriots fan in the face on the concourse at MetLife Stadium.”
“The police said that the fight broke out around 4:30 p.m. on the concourse after the Jets beat the Patriots, 30-27, in overtime.”
The YouTube video, now seen by over 130,000 people, indicates that the combatants wore team “colors” and one was known for his green and white Jetsmobile.
How important was this win or loss? Despite the high emotions resulting from an overtime ending, will the fight be worth the court appearances? Who will remember the result in even a few months’ time?
Of course, the teams benefit from having zealous fans who buy expensive tickets, eat expensive hot dogs, drink expensive beer and wear expensive jerseys. The buzz created by a Jetsmobile might also be helpful.
How does the zeal of these four fans compare to that of Democrats and Republicans, who also fight tooth and nail for often-pointless wins?
Who remembers? Who cares? Well, other than the parties themselves that get paid for the pointless fighting.
Are those who support our two political parties really any different from fans who buy expensive tickets, eat expensive hot dogs, drink expensive beer and wear expensive jerseys?
Do campaign busses differ from Jetsmobiles?

The outcome of political fighting is not always pointless. It results in in such things as laws being passed or not being passed, people appointed or refused appointment and other meaningful outcomes.

You are right, of course, David. But one of Haven’s schticks is to use conflation to claim meaninglessness for anything that does not further the power of the state. He knows that there are significant differences. That’s why he dons the mantle of “classical” liberalism while, for the most part, writing as a mill-run leftist.
